My name is André Benevides, a Brazilian artist and theoretical physicist based in Trieste, Italy.
I draw inspiration from my life experiences and existential exploration and reflect it into my art.
My oil paintings feature elements of Brazilian fauna, flora and people, often taking center stage, alongside intense gazes that evoke deep emotions.
Most of my work is made in an imaginative realistic style, sometimes surreal, sometimes mystical.
I bring together elements that often transcend the real and evoke a mystery or a magical aura to the scene, capturing beauty while also bringing some strangeness, a peculiar look that invites the viewers to look at the usual through renewed lenses.
As an artist, my creative process unfolds guided my moments in nature and of introspection, resulting in paintings that spark imagination and evoke curiosity, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue with the artwork and explore their own interpretations.
I was born in 1991 and grew up in the city of Niterói.
In 2016 I decided to create an illustrated dictionary of Tupi in watercolors, as I was learning the language. This endeavor reconected me to painting and ultimately led me to explore new avenues, including painting in oils.
The pandemic shifted my focus inward, resulting in introspective artworks reflecting psychological processes.
From self-referential portraits capturing isolation to symbolic paintings like the snake encircling a rabbit of light, each piece invites viewers to explore their own interpretations.
For me, paintings are soul mirrors, evoking emotions and sparking personal journeys.
Every canvas is a dialogue between creation and perception, offering endless possibilities for connection and reflection.
